Key points
- Most e visa refusals come from simple errors: wrong or missing data, an unreadable passport scan or a payment problem.
- Serious reasons include security concerns, false information, an earlier expulsion or ban, and unpaid migration fines.
- The reason is sent to you by email. The fee is not refunded.
- After a refusal, the official conditions let you apply at an Azerbaijani embassy.
- An e visa with a wrong name or number is a problem at the border, so check it the moment it arrives.

Why was my Azerbaijan e visa refused?
The government decides on every e visa, and it does not have to accept every application. Most refusals are not about you as a person. They come from small mistakes in the form. The refusal email tells you the reason, so read it first.
If you used an agency or a service, ask them to forward the email to you. Knowing the exact reason saves you from repeating the same mistake.
| Reason | What it means | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Wrong or incomplete data | A name, date or passport number does not match the passport | Check every field against the passport before paying |
| Unreadable passport scan | The system could not read the photo page | Use a sharp colour scan, no glare, all corners visible |
| Payment error | The card payment did not go through correctly | Use a card that allows online foreign payments |
| Wrong passport | You applied with one passport and travel with another | Apply with the passport you will travel on |
| Legal grounds | Security, false information, earlier ban or unpaid fines | Read the email; an embassy can explain your case |
Serious reasons in the law
The Migration Code lists reasons why entry can be refused or a visa cancelled. These apply to the e visa and to embassy visas alike.
- Risks to national security or public order.
- Crimes against peace or humanity, terrorism or organised crime.
- An unserved conviction for a crime against Azerbaijan or its citizens.
- An earlier expulsion while the entry ban still runs.
- A stay considered undesirable by the authorities.
- Breaking the declared purpose on an earlier visit, for example working on a tourist visa, which can bring a 5 year ban.
- False information about yourself or your purpose, which can also bring a 5 year ban.
- Unpaid migration fines. The ban lifts as soon as the fine is paid.
Mistakes to avoid when you apply
Most of these take a minute to check. Sit down with your passport open next to the screen and go through the form field by field before you pay. Ask someone else to read the names and numbers out loud while you check them.
Our step by step guide and the e visa requirements cover each check.
- Typing your name in a different order or spelling from the passport.
- Swapping the day and month in your birth date or passport dates.
- Taking a photo of the passport at an angle, with fingers or reflections over the text.
- Using a passport that ends less than 3 months after the e visa does.
- Choosing a purpose that does not match your trip, such as Tourism when you come to study.
- Paying on a lookalike site instead of evisa.gov.az.
What to do after a refusal
- 1
Read the email
The refusal reason is sent to the email you used in the application. Keep it.
- 2
Find the cause
Compare the data you entered with your passport. If you used an agency, ask them for a copy of what they submitted.
- 3
Apply at an embassy
The e visa conditions let you apply at an Azerbaijani embassy or consulate after a refusal. See embassy visas for documents and fees.
- 4
Ask the portal if something is unclear
Use the contact form on evisa.gov.az/en/contact. Do not trust sites that promise to reverse a refusal for a fee.
- 5
Pay any old fines
If the cause is an unpaid migration fine, paying it lifts the entry ban.
The official e visa fee is not refunded after a refusal. If you used a service, its own refund rules apply separately.
My e visa was issued with a mistake
If the visa arrives with a wrong letter in your name or a wrong passport number, it may not match your passport at the border. The fee for a visa with a data error is not refunded, and you will usually need a new correct visa before you travel. Check the PDF the minute it arrives, while there is still time to apply again.
To avoid this, keep your passport next to you while you fill in the form, and copy the names letter by letter, exactly as printed on the data page.
Refused at the border with a valid e visa
An e visa lets you travel, but border officers make the final check. Entry can still be refused under the law. Officers check that your purpose fits your trip, so carry papers that show it: hotel booking and return ticket for tourism, a company letter for business, an admission letter for study.
Travellers without a valid passport or visa are returned, and forged documents bring criminal liability.
Journalists and camera crews need accreditation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before the trip. Without it, the visa can be cancelled and the person expelled. People with two nationalities must travel on the passport they used in the application, or the e visa is not valid.
If Sroky filed your application
The Sroky team checks your details against your passport page before filing, which removes most typing mistakes. Still, the government decides on every visa and Sroky cannot change a refusal. If an urgent visa misses its window, Sroky refunds its own fee; the official fee is never refunded. Sroky is a private service, not the government.
If you were refused and are unsure why, an embassy can explain the next step for your case. Avoid any website that promises a guaranteed visa: nobody but the government can decide.
Let Sroky file your e visa
Check your passport for free, fill in the application in the app and we file it on the official portal. You pay our fee and the official fee as separate lines.
