What is an e visa?
An e visa, or electronic visa, is permission to enter a country that you request on a website instead of at an embassy. You fill in a form, upload a scan of your passport, pay by card and get the visa as a PDF by email.
There is no sticker in your passport and no appointment. The visa is linked to your passport number in the government system. You print it and show it with the same passport when you arrive.
Many countries now offer e visas for short trips such as tourism, family visits and business meetings. Each country sets its own rules on who can apply, how long you can stay and what you can do.
How the Azerbaijan e visa (ASAN Visa) works
Azerbaijan's electronic visa is called ASAN Visa. It is run by the State Agency for Public Service and Social Innovations (ASAN) and the Migration Code describes it in Article 38. You apply on evisa.gov.az, which is the only official website for it.
Citizens of 87 countries can apply, for example the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, India, Pakistan, Iran and Malaysia. Stateless people who live permanently in one of those countries can also apply. Use the free visa checker to see the result for your passport.
Be careful with lookalike websites. Many sites use names close to the official one and charge two or three times the official fee. Azerbaijani embassies say the only official website is evisa.gov.az. Always check that the address ends in .gov.az before you type your passport details or pay.

Why people choose the e visa
- You apply from home, on a phone or a computer, at any time.
- No embassy visit, no interview and no invitation letter.
- A clear, low fee: USD 29 for the standard visa.
- Fast: 3 working days, or 3 hours with urgent processing.
- One family application can cover 2 to 10 people, and a group application 10 to 300 people.
- You can pay with Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay or JCB, and the card does not have to be in your name.
How an e visa differs from a paper visa
A paper visa, or embassy visa, is issued by an Azerbaijani embassy or consulate. You usually need an invitation from someone in Azerbaijan first, then you hand in a form, photos, insurance and the fee at the embassy. A decision takes up to 15 days.
Embassy visas cover more purposes and longer stays. A business visa can allow up to 180 days, and work, study and medical visas up to 90 days. Multiple entry visas exist too. The e visa is simpler but only for short visits of up to 30 days. Read the full e visa vs embassy visa comparison to choose.
Both kinds of visa are only for entry. If you want to live in Azerbaijan, you apply for a temporary residence permit after you arrive, whichever visa you came on.
What you can and cannot do on an e visa
In the form you choose the purpose of your trip, for example Tourism, Personal trip, Business, Medical, Culture or Sport, or Education. Pick the one that matches what you will really do. The law says your stay must match the purpose shown on the visa.
Business meetings, conferences and site visits are fine on a Business e visa. Paid work is not. Work needs an employer's work permit and a residence permit. Students who come on an e visa with the purpose Education must apply for a temporary residence permit soon after arrival, because the e visa itself only gives 30 days.
You cannot extend an e visa to study or work, and you can only request a new e visa after you leave Azerbaijan.
If you stay more than 15 days, you must be registered at your address. Overstaying or not registering can bring a fine of 300 to 400 AZN. Your hotel or landlord usually does the registration, but check that it is done.
Who does not need an e visa, and who cannot get one
Some passports need no visa at all. Citizens of Türkiye, Georgia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and several other countries can stay up to 90 days visa free, and Russians up to 90 days per calendar year. See the visa free countries list.
If your passport is not visa free and not on the e visa list, you apply at an Azerbaijani embassy. A few nationalities can also get a visa at the airport. The government decides on every application, and only official sources are final.
