Who needs an embassy visa for Azerbaijan?
Not sure which group you are in? The free visa checker tells you whether your passport is visa free, can use the e visa or must go to an embassy.
Even if your passport can use the e visa, you may still choose an embassy visa. This makes sense when you need more than 30 days, several entries in one visa, or when your university or employer asks for it.
- Citizens of countries that are not visa free and cannot use the e visa, for example Bangladesh, Nigeria, Egypt, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, the Philippines and most of Africa.
- Anyone who comes to work. The e visa never allows paid work.
- People who need a longer stay or several entries, such as a business visa for up to 180 days.
- People whose e visa was refused. The official conditions let them apply at an embassy.
Embassy visa types and how long you can stay
A single entry visa is valid up to 90 days and a multiple entry visa up to 2 years. Work and study visas are only the first step: after arrival you need a temporary residence permit, and for work also a work permit.
| Visa (Migration Code article) | Longest stay | Invitation needed |
|---|---|---|
| Business (26) | 180 days | Yes, from a company, state body or entrepreneur |
| Science or education (27) | 90 days | Yes, from the university |
| Work (28) | 90 days | Yes, from the employer |
| Medical treatment (29) | 90 days | Yes, from the clinic |
| Private visit (30) | 90 days | Notarised invitation from the host |
| Humanitarian (31) | 90 days | Yes |
| Culture and sport (32) | 60 days | Yes, from the organiser |
| Tourism (33) | 30 days | No |
| Transit (34) | 5 days, valid 30 days | No |
How the embassy visa works, step by step
- 1
The invitation is filed in Azerbaijan
For business, work, study, treatment, humanitarian, culture and sport visas, the inviting company or institution files an invitation with the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and pays a 4 AZN state fee. It names the embassy where you will apply. Read invitation letters for what they submit.
- 2
The ministry tells the embassy
After approval, the ministry sends an instruction to the embassy or consulate you chose. Ask your host to confirm when this is done before you book an appointment.
- 3
Fill in the online form
Applications are made through the ministry's portal visaapplication.mfa.gov.az. Some embassies accept only applications from the portal.
- 4
Hand in your documents
Apply in person or through a representative at an Azerbaijani embassy or consulate, in your country of residence or in a third country.
- 5
Pay and wait for the decision
Pay the state fee. The decision comes within 15 days. In urgent cases, such as medical treatment or the serious illness or death of a close relative in Azerbaijan, within 2 working days.
Documents for an embassy visa
The embassy may ask for more papers for your case, so check its own page before you go. The basic set in the Migration Code is:
- Visa application form.
- Passport valid at least 3 months beyond the visa, plus copies.
- Two colour biometric photos, 3x4 cm.
- Medical insurance, unless your host covers your costs.
- Receipt for the state fee.
- Invitation documents, when your purpose needs them.
- Documents for your purpose, for example a tour voucher or ticket and hotel booking for tourism, the onward ticket and destination visa for transit, or proof of funds for study.
- For under 18s travelling alone: a notarised copy of the birth certificate, the parents' permission and copies of their ID.
Embassy visa fees
The fee is charged per person, even in a group, and is not refunded. Some treaties set different rates for some countries, and embassies may add their own charges, so confirm the amount with the embassy before you go.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also lists state fee exemptions for some ordinary passports, for example Japan and Pakistan, for short stays. Read the MFA state fee page to see whether your passport is covered.
| Visa | State fee |
|---|---|
| Single entry | USD 20 |
| Transit | USD 20 |
| Multiple entry | USD 350 |
| Invitation filed by a company | 4 AZN, paid by the inviting side |
Tips for a smooth embassy application
- Ask your host to start the invitation early. The ministry must approve it before the embassy can act.
- Give your host a clear copy of your passport and tell them which embassy you will use.
- Check whether your embassy needs an appointment and accepts only portal applications.
- Make sure your passport is valid at least 3 months after the visa ends, and longer if you plan a residence permit.
- Before you go, check whether you could use the e visa or a visa at the airport instead. For short visits it is usually faster.
After you arrive
Stay inside the purpose and the days on your visa. The law says your stay must match the purpose shown on the visa, and breaking it can bring a fine and a 5 year entry ban.
If you stay more than 15 days, you must be registered at your address. If you came to work or study, apply for your residence permit in time. The temporary residence permit guide explains the timing. Sroky can keep your visa and permit dates on your phone and remind you before each deadline.
Overstaying a visa can bring a fine of 300 to 400 AZN. An unpaid fine can stop you from entering again.
