Which countries can enter Azerbaijan without a visa?

Azerbaijan has two kinds of visa free entry for ordinary passports. The first comes from agreements between two countries and has no end date. The second is a temporary one sided decision by Azerbaijan, with a fixed end date. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs keeps the official list on its visa free countries page.

If your country is not here, check the free visa checker. You may be able to get an e visa online instead.

Visa free means you do not need to apply for anything before you fly. You show a valid passport at the border and you get an entry stamp. The rules on how long you may stay, and what you may do, still apply to you.

The Russia rule: 90 days per calendar year

Russian citizens can stay in Azerbaijan visa free, but the limit is 90 days in total within one calendar year, from 1 January to 31 December. Every visit counts. If you spent 60 days in spring, only 30 days are left until the new year.

Keep your entry and exit dates. A day counter, like the one in the Sroky app, adds up your days so you know how many are left.

The same idea applies to China, in a different form: up to 30 days per entry and at most 90 days in any 180 day period. Here the 180 days roll forward, so look back 180 days from today to count.

Temporary visa free windows with end dates

Azerbaijan has opened temporary visa free entry for some passports on its own decision. These are for ordinary passports, allow 3 entries within one year, and up to 30 days per entry. A fourth entry needs a visa.

PassportVisa free until
Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR2 February 2027
Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait15 February 2027
Japan, Republic of Korea1 July 2027
Bosnia and Herzegovina, Singapore1 August 2027

After the end date these passports need a visa again unless the window is extended. Most of them can then use the e visa or a visa at the airport. Check the MFA page before you travel.

How long a visa free stay can be

The Migration Code says a visa free stay cannot be longer than 90 days, unless an international agreement sets another period. To stay longer, you must apply for a temporary residence permit before your days run out. A stay extension is possible only for specific reasons, such as urgent treatment or a close relative's illness or death.

If you stay more than 15 days, you must also be registered at your address. Hotels usually do this for you, and landlords or hosts must do it when you stay with them. There is no fee.

Overstaying a visa free period or staying without registration can bring a fine of 300 to 400 AZN. Unpaid fines can block your next entry. See overstay fines.

Can visa free visitors work or study?

Visa free entry lets you visit. It does not give a right to work. Paid work needs a work permit from your employer and a temporary residence permit. Students also need a residence permit for the study period.

Qatar and Maldives citizens need a visa in advance to study or work. Citizens of the other agreement countries should ask their university or employer before travelling, because some ask for a matching visa even when entry is visa free. The government decides each application.

Before you travel visa free

Residents of some Gulf countries who are not visa free themselves may still get a visa at the airport. This covers people with a residence permit valid more than 6 months in Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar or Kuwait, and holders of a UAE resident visa valid more than 6 months. See e visa vs embassy visa for the airport visa rules.

Sroky can count your days in Azerbaijan from your entry and exit dates and remind you before the limit, so a long stay never turns into an overstay by accident.

  • Check that your passport is ordinary. Diplomatic and service passports follow separate agreements.
  • Keep your passport valid for your whole stay, with a safety margin.
  • Count your days, especially if you visit often. The limit applies to all visits together.
  • If you stay more than 15 days, make sure you are registered at your address.
  • For the temporary windows, check the end date and how many of your 3 entries you have used.
  • Plan any residence permit application before your days run out, not after.

Neighbours that are not visa free

Iran and Turkmenistan are not visa free; their citizens can use the e visa. Armenia is not on any list and has no e visa. Everyone else who is not visa free needs an e visa, an airport visa or an embassy visa.

Let Sroky file your e visa

Check your passport for free, fill in the application in the app and we file it on the official portal. You pay our fee and the official fee as separate lines.
