Key points

  • Choose the e visa for short visits of up to 30 days if your passport is on the list of 87 countries.
  • Choose an embassy visa if your passport is not eligible, or you need more than 30 days, several entries, or a work visa.
  • The e visa costs USD 29 standard and takes up to 3 working days; an embassy visa has a USD 20 or USD 350 state fee and takes up to 15 days.
  • Most embassy visas need an invitation filed in Azerbaijan first. The e visa needs none.
  • Neither visa lets you live in Azerbaijan long term. For that you need a temporary residence permit.

The short answer

If you are visa free, you need neither. If your passport can use the e visa and your trip is a visit of up to 30 days, the e visa is almost always the easier choice. In every other case you go to an Azerbaijani embassy.

The free visa checker shows which route applies to your passport and purpose in a few seconds. The government makes the final decision in every case.

Think of it in three questions. Is my passport visa free? Can my passport use the e visa? Does my trip fit in one entry and 30 days without paid work? If the answer to the last two is yes, choose the e visa. If not, plan for the embassy and ask your host about an invitation early.

When the e visa is the right choice

The e visa is simple because it asks for little: your passport scan, your details, an email and a card. In return it allows only one entry and a short stay.

Our step by step e visa guide explains every screen.

  • A holiday of up to 30 days.
  • Visiting family or friends for a short time.
  • Business meetings, conferences or site visits, without paid work.
  • Medical treatment or an event that fits in 30 days.
  • Admitted students from e visa countries who will apply for a residence permit right after arrival, if their university agrees.

When you need an embassy visa

The embassy route takes more time and paperwork, but it covers every nationality and every purpose, including work.

See how the embassy visa works and what an invitation needs.

  • Your passport is not visa free and not on the e visa list.
  • You come to work. The e visa never allows paid work.
  • You need more than 30 days, for example a business visa for up to 180 days.
  • You need several entries on one visa.
  • Your university or employer asks for an embassy visa.
  • Your e visa was refused.

A third option: the visa at the airport

Some travellers can get a 30 day single entry visa through ASAN Visa at Azerbaijan's international airports. This covers citizens of Oman, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Japan, Indonesia, China, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and Israel. Several of these are visa free for now anyway.

It also covers people who hold a residence permit valid more than 6 months in Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar or Kuwait, holders of a UAE resident visa valid more than 6 months, US citizens on the direct New York to Baku flight, people coming after the death of a family member living in Azerbaijan, and citizens of countries with direct flights but no Azerbaijani embassy. The airport fee is not published, so check before you travel.

Do not count on the airport visa unless you are sure you are on this list. If you are not, arrange your visa before you fly.

Staying longer than your visa

Both visas are for entry. To live in Azerbaijan for work, study or family, you apply for a temporary residence permit before your stay ends. A filed application keeps your stay legal while it is decided. Choose a visa purpose that matches your plan, because the residence permit office checks it.

Read the temporary residence permit guide. Sroky keeps your visa, permit and passport dates on your phone and reminds you before each one runs out.

Using a visa for a different purpose, such as working on a tourist visa, can bring a fine and a 5 year entry ban.

Frequently asked questions

Is the e visa better than an embassy visa for Azerbaijan?

For short visits of up to 30 days, yes: it is online, cheap and fast. For work, long business trips or several entries, you need an embassy visa.

Can I apply at an embassy even if I can get an e visa?

Yes. Any nationality can apply at an Azerbaijani embassy, but it usually takes longer and many purposes need an invitation first.

Which is faster?

The e visa: 3 working days, or 3 hours with urgent processing. An embassy decides within 15 days.

Can I work on either visa?

Only with a work visa from an embassy, followed by a work permit and a temporary residence permit. The e visa never allows paid work.

Does Azerbaijan have visa on arrival?

Only for some nationalities and some residents of Gulf states at international airports. Everyone else needs to arrange a visa before travel unless they are visa free.

Can I switch from an e visa to a residence permit?

The law allows a residence permit after entry on an e visa, if you apply before your stay ends and meet a ground such as study, work or family.
