Key points
- The Azerbaijan e visa conditions say you may not do paid work in Azerbaijan. Working in a local job or for local clients on a tourist stay is not allowed.
- No official text says clearly whether answering emails for a foreign employer while on holiday counts as work. It is a grey zone, so keep it low key and short.
- Your stay limit does not change because you work online: 30 days on the e visa, up to 90 days for most visa free passports, and you register your address after 15 days.
- More than 182 days in Azerbaijan in a calendar year can make you a tax resident.
- For a longer stay, use a residence permit route, such as a work permit or your own company. A special digital nomad route is planned from 2027 but is not fully published.

Can I work remotely in Azerbaijan on a tourist visa?
The honest answer is: the law is clear about local work and unclear about remote work. A tourist stay, on the e visa or without a visa, is for tourism, visits and short business trips. The official e visa conditions on evisa.gov.az say the holder may not do paid work in Azerbaijan.
That clearly covers a job with an Azerbaijani company, shifts in a cafe, paid shoots for local brands or teaching local students for money. For all of that you need a work permit or another permit that allows work.
What the rules do not say is whether a laptop job for an employer or clients abroad counts as work in Azerbaijan. We found no official page, law article or ministry answer that settles it as of 1 November 2026. Many visitors check emails or join a few calls during a trip, and we found no public case of someone fined only for that. But no official source says it is allowed either.
What is clearly allowed and what is not
This table is our reading of the official rules. It is not legal advice, and the border guard and the State Migration Service have the final word.
| Activity on a tourist stay | Status | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Holiday, visiting friends, short meetings | Allowed | This is what tourist and visa free stays are for |
| Job or paid work for a company in Azerbaijan | Not allowed | E visa conditions ban paid work; a work permit is needed |
| Paid services for local clients | Not allowed | This is paid activity in Azerbaijan |
| A few emails or calls for your employer abroad | Grey zone | No official text says yes or no |
| Full time remote job abroad for months | Grey zone, higher risk | Stay limits apply, and tax residency may start after 182 days |
How long can I stay while working online?
Working remotely does not give you more days. You still follow the normal limits for your passport. Check yours with the free checker on Sroky or on the visa pages.
- E visa: single entry, up to 30 days. You can get a new e visa only after you leave the country.
- Visa free passports: up to 90 days by law, and some countries have shorter limits, for example 30 days.
- Russian citizens: at most 90 days in a calendar year without a permit.
- Staying more than 15 days: your place of stay must be registered within 15 days of arrival. Hotels usually do it; with a private flat the landlord or you must do it. See address registration.
- An extension of a visit is possible only for a few reasons, such as illness or a family emergency. Remote work is not one of them.
Overstaying or not registering can cost a fine of AZN 300 to 400 and removal from the country. See overstay fines.
Do I pay tax in Azerbaijan if I work remotely from Baku?
Under Article 13.2.5 of the Tax Code, a person who is in Azerbaijan for more than 182 days in a calendar year is a tax resident. A tax resident is in principle taxed in Azerbaijan on worldwide income. Your home country may also tax you, and a tax treaty may decide which country has the first right.
On a tourist stay you will rarely reach 182 days, because the stay limits stop you first. But people who come and go many times in a year, or who later move to a residence permit, should count their days. Ask a tax adviser before you pass 182 days.
Safer ways to live and work in Azerbaijan longer
If you want to stay for months, a residence permit is the clean route. Each one has its own papers and fees.
- 1
Work permit through an employer
A company in Azerbaijan hires you, gets a work permit, and you then get a temporary residence permit. See work permit.
- 2
Your own company
Some foreigners open a company and get residence through it. Read opening a company first, because tax and reporting duties start at once.
- 3
Other residence grounds
Study, marriage to a citizen, or family of a permit holder can also give a temporary residence permit. See the residence permit guide.

Watch the 2027 nomad route
Laws approved in 2026 define digital nomads and link them to technology park residency from 2027. The full conditions are not published yet. See Azerbaijan digital nomad visa.
Practical tips if you work during a short trip
- At the border, say the true purpose of your trip. If you come as a tourist, do not describe yourself as coming to work.
- Do not sign contracts with Azerbaijani clients or take local payments on a tourist stay.
- Keep your stay inside the limit and register your address after 15 days.
- Keep your entry date, your 15 day registration date and your last day in a reminder app. Sroky can remind you of each one.
- For a phone with a local SIM, register the IMEI within 30 days. See phone registration.
Never miss this deadline
Add your permit, passport and registration to Sroky. It counts the days, warns you early and keeps every document encrypted on your phone.
Frequently asked questions
Is it legal to work remotely in Azerbaijan on an e visa?
Paid work in Azerbaijan is not allowed on the e visa. Whether remote work for a foreign employer counts is not stated in any official text, so it is a grey zone.
Does Azerbaijan have a digital nomad visa in 2026?
Not yet. Laws approved in 2026 define digital nomads and plan a route from 2027, but the full conditions and income rules are not published.
How long can I stay in Baku as a remote worker without a visa?
The same as any visitor with your passport: up to 90 days for many visa free passports, less for some, and 30 days on the e visa.
When do I become a tax resident in Azerbaijan?
When you are in Azerbaijan for more than 182 days in a calendar year (Tax Code, Article 13.2.5). Check with a tax adviser before that point.
Can I extend my e visa to keep working?
No. A stay is extended only for a few reasons such as illness or a family emergency. For a longer stay you need a residence permit.
Can I do a visa run to Georgia and come back?
On the e visa you can apply for a new one after you leave. Check your passport's day limits first, and remember that land borders are closed to passengers until 2 January 2027, so the trip is by air.
