Which visa do digital nomads use in Baku?
Azerbaijan has no digital nomad visa you can apply for today. New laws approved in 2026 plan a route for digital nomads from 2027, linked to tax registration and technology park residency, but the details are not published. Read Azerbaijan digital nomad visa for what is confirmed.
So for now you use the normal rules for your passport. Many nationalities get the e visa on evisa.gov.az: single entry, up to 30 days, issued within 3 working days, with a USD 20 state fee and a USD 9 service fee. Others can come visa free, often for up to 90 days. Check your passport with the free checker on Sroky.
The e visa does not allow paid work in Azerbaijan. Remote work for a foreign employer is a grey zone, explained in remote work on a tourist visa.
Your first week: the deadlines that matter
- 1
Day 1: arrive by air
Land borders are closed to passengers until 2 January 2027 (Cabinet decision of 17 September 2026). Plan to fly in and fly out.
- 2
Day 1: declare your phone
If you will use a local SIM, declare the phone at customs (red channel or electronic declaration). See phone registration.
- 3
Within 15 days: register your address
If you stay more than 15 days, your place of stay must be registered within 15 days of arrival. It is free. Hotels do it; for a rented flat the owner or you file it. See address registration.
- 4
Within 30 days: register the IMEI
A phone used with a local SIM must be registered within 30 days, or it is blocked. The fee is AZN 15 to 100 by model.
- 5
Before your last day: leave or switch
Leave before your 30 or 90 days end. Sroky can remind you of the registration date and your last day of stay.
How much does it cost to live in Baku?
We found no official cost of living figure for foreigners in Baku. The ranges below come from Numbeo, a site where users report prices. It is not an official source, prices change fast, and your own costs depend a lot on the area and the season. We checked the page on 1 November 2026 (it was last updated on 31 October 2026).
For context from an official source: the State Statistics Committee gives the average monthly nominal salary in Azerbaijan as AZN 1,151.5 for January to March 2026. Prices for foreigners in central Baku are often well above what a local budget looks like.

Prices are in Azerbaijani manat (AZN). The Central Bank of Azerbaijan publishes the official exchange rate each day on cbar.az.
Finding a flat as a remote worker
Most nomads start in a hotel or short let for the first days, then look for a monthly rental. Before you pay a deposit, see the flat in person or by video, ask for a written contract, and agree who registers your address. A landlord who does not register a foreign guest can be fined AZN 300 to 500, so honest landlords will help.
If you stay long term and later apply for a residence permit, you will need a housing document. Read renting an apartment in Baku before you sign.
Internet, SIM cards and coworking
Three mobile operators work in Azerbaijan: Azercell, Bakcell and Nar. You buy a SIM with your passport. Plans and tourist packages change often, so compare them in tourist SIM cards in Azerbaijan. Remember the IMEI rule: a foreign phone with a local SIM must be registered within 30 days.
Home broadband is common in flats in Baku, but speeds differ by building and provider. We found no official speed figures for Baku, so ask the landlord which provider the flat uses and test the connection on the first day. Keep mobile data as a backup for important calls.
Baku has coworking spaces and many cafes where people work with laptops. We could not confirm current coworking prices from an official or stable source, so contact the space directly for day and month rates.
Money, tax and staying legal
- Cards work widely in Baku, and cash is still useful in small shops and markets. See money in Azerbaijan for visitors.
- More than 182 days in Azerbaijan in a calendar year can make you a tax resident (Tax Code, Article 13.2.5).
- Do not take paid work from local clients on a tourist stay.
- Overstay or no registration: a fine of AZN 300 to 400, and an unpaid fine can block your next entry.
- Thinking of Georgia too? Compare in Baku vs Tbilisi for remote workers.
