Key points
- Most refusals come down to a few reasons: the purpose of the trip is not clear, the money is not proven, or the officer is not sure you will go home.
- A Schengen refusal comes on a standard form with ticked reasons, and it tells you how to appeal in that country.
- Most UK visitor visa refusals have no right of appeal. You reapply with better evidence that answers each point in the letter.
- A US 214(b) refusal means the officer was not convinced you will return. There is no appeal; you reapply with a new form, fee and interview, ideally after your situation has changed.
- Visa fees are not refunded after a refusal. Fix the cause before you pay again.

Why visas are refused: the common reasons
Officers in Europe, the UK and the US look for the same three things: a believable reason for the trip, enough money to pay for it, and strong reasons to go home afterwards, such as a job, studies, family or property. Most refusals mean one of those was missing or unclear.
Other reasons are less common but serious: a false document, an old overstay, a criminal record, or answers in the form that do not match the papers.
- Purpose not clear: no hotel booking, no invitation, or an itinerary that does not match the visa type.
- Money not proven: a bank statement with a large deposit just before applying, no salary history, or a sponsor with no proof of their own income.
- Weak ties at home: no work letter, a new job, no family or property, or a past trip where you stayed too long.
- Missing documents: no travel medical insurance for Schengen, missing translations, or expired papers.
- Inconsistent answers: dates, employers or relatives that differ between the form, the documents and the interview.
Schengen refusal: reading the standard form
Every Schengen country uses the same refusal form. The consulate ticks one or more reasons. Knowing what each box means tells you what to fix.
| Reason on the form | What it usually means | What to fix |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose and conditions of the stay not justified | The officer did not understand or believe the plan | Clear itinerary, bookings, invitation letter, conference or business papers |
| Not enough means of subsistence | The money shown is too low or not believable | Several months of statements showing regular income, salary letter, sponsor documents |
| Intention to leave before the visa ends could not be confirmed | Weak ties at home | Employer letter with approved leave, property papers, family proof, past travel history |
| Information about purpose and conditions not reliable | Documents or answers did not match | Make every date and name match; explain any change in writing |
| No valid travel medical insurance | Policy missing, too small or wrong dates | A policy with at least EUR 30,000 cover for the whole trip |
| Already stayed 90 days in the last 180 | Past trips used up your days | Wait until enough days are free |
| Alert in the Schengen Information System or a threat to public order | A past problem in Europe | Ask the consulate which state issued the alert; get legal advice |
You can appeal a Schengen refusal in the country that refused you. The letter says where and by when. Deadlines are short, often a few weeks, so read the letter on the day you receive it.
UK refusal: no appeal for most visitors
A UK refusal letter lists the paragraphs of the Immigration Rules you did not meet and explains why. It also says whether you have a right of appeal or can ask for an administrative review. For most visitor visas you have neither, unless the refusal touches human rights.
That means the practical route is a new application. There is no fixed waiting time. Reapply only when you can answer every point in the letter with new evidence. Applying again with the same papers usually gives the same result, and each refusal must be declared in later UK forms.

US refusal: 214(b) and 221(g)
Section 214(b) of the US immigration law assumes every visitor wants to immigrate until they show otherwise. A 214(b) refusal means the consular officer was not convinced, at that interview, that your ties abroad will make you return. It is not a permanent ban and applies only to that application.
There is no appeal. You can reapply with a new form, a new fee and a new interview. US embassies advise you to wait until your circumstances have changed in a real way, such as a new job, a promotion, marriage or a solid travel history. Repeating the same story at a second interview rarely changes the answer.
A 221(g) letter is different. It means the officer needs more documents or more checks before deciding. Send what is asked for and wait; it is not yet a refusal. For the Baku interview, read the US visa from Baku.
What to do after a refusal
- 1
Read the letter calmly
Underline every reason and every deadline. Keep a copy of the letter; you will need it for future applications.
- 2
Decide: appeal or reapply
For Schengen, an appeal can work if the consulate made a clear mistake. In most other cases, and for the UK and US, a better new application is faster.
- 3
Fix each reason with evidence
Do not just add more paper. Add the document that answers the exact reason, for example a salary history for means, or an employer letter for ties.
- 4
Be honest about the refusal
Forms ask about past refusals. Saying no when the answer is yes is a much bigger problem than the refusal itself.
- 5
Consider a simpler trip first
A visa free or e visa trip builds a travel history that later applications can show.
Tips for Azerbaijani, Pakistani, Indian, Russian and Turkish applicants
All five nationalities need visas for Schengen, the UK and the US, so a good file matters. Use bank statements in your own name with a steady salary, an employer letter on company paper with your position, salary and approved leave, and translations into English or the language of the consulate.
Build travel history with easier trips first. See where your passport goes without a visa or with an e visa: Azerbaijan, Pakistan, India, Russia, Türkiye. If an Azerbaijan e visa was refused, read Azerbaijan e visa refused.

Frequently asked questions
Can I reapply after a Schengen visa refusal?
Yes, at any time. You can also appeal in the country that refused you. Fix the ticked reasons first, or the new application will likely be refused again.
What does a 214(b) refusal mean?
It means the US officer was not convinced you will return home after the visit. There is no appeal, but you can reapply with a new application, fee and interview.
Can I appeal a UK visitor visa refusal?
Usually not. The letter says if you have a right of appeal or administrative review. Most visitors reapply with stronger evidence instead.
Is the visa fee refunded if I am refused?
No. Schengen, UK and US visa fees are not refunded after a refusal, so fix the problem before you pay again.
Does a refusal stop me getting other visas?
Not by itself, but many forms ask about past refusals in any country. Always answer honestly and explain what has changed.
How long should I wait before reapplying for a US visa?
There is no fixed rule. US embassies advise waiting until your circumstances have changed in a meaningful way, since the same facts usually give the same answer.
