How many countries can Azerbaijanis visit without a visa?
It depends on how you count. Some lists count only visa free entry, others add visa on arrival and electronic authorisations. In the Sroky table of where Azerbaijani passports can travel, which covers 194 destinations, the split looks like this:
| Type of entry | Destinations | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Visa free | 33 | Show your passport at the border |
| Visa on arrival | 25 | Get the visa at the airport, often for a fee |
| E visa | 44 | Apply online before you travel |
| Electronic travel authorisation | 3 | Short online approval, for example Sri Lanka or Kenya |
| Embassy visa | 89 | Apply in advance at an embassy or visa centre |
Rules change often. Each row on the full table shows its source and how sure we are. Always confirm with the embassy or airline before you buy tickets.
The official visa free list from the Azerbaijani MFA
Azerbaijan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs publishes the countries that apply a visa free regime by agreement. For ordinary passports the list below gives the stay each agreement allows. Some countries also have their own wider rules, so the real limit can be longer.
| Country | Visa free stay (MFA list) | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Türkiye | 90 days | 90 in any 180 days; new ID card works on direct trips |
| Georgia | 90 days by agreement | Georgia's own rules allow longer stays; check the Georgian consular site |
| Russia | 90 days per calendar year | International passport only; register within 7 working days |
| Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine | 90 days | Check local registration rules |
| United Arab Emirates | 90 days | Tourism and visits, not work |
| Qatar | 30 days | Study or work needs a visa |
| China | 30 days per entry | Not more than 90 days in any 180 |
| Serbia, Albania, Morocco | 90 days | Ordinary passports |
| Maldives | 90 days | Since 29 April 2026; fill in the IMUGA declaration |
| Iran, Malaysia, Bosnia and Herzegovina | 15, 30 and 90 days | Applied by those countries on their side |
What changed for Azerbaijani passports in 2026
- Maldives: a mutual visa exemption for ordinary passports has applied since 29 April 2026, for up to 90 days.
- Thailand: since 15 September 2026, Azerbaijan is one of only three countries on Thailand's visa on arrival list, for up to 15 days. Old articles about 60 days visa free are out of date. See Thailand for Azerbaijanis.
- Montenegro: visas for Azerbaijani citizens came back from 15 January 2026, even though some older lists still show 90 days. Check with Montenegro's embassy before you go.
- Jordan: a 90 day mutual visa waiver was ratified by Azerbaijan in October 2026, but its start date was not confirmed when we checked. Until then, plan for a visa on arrival.
- China: the mutual visa exemption that started on 16 July 2025 is now in its second year.

Where Azerbaijanis still need a visa
The big destinations for study, work and family visits still need a visa in advance: the 29 Schengen countries, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea. ETIAS, the UK ETA and ESTA are not available to Azerbaijani passports, because those systems are only for nationalities that are already visa free.
The good news: under the EU and Azerbaijan visa facilitation agreement, the Schengen visa fee for Azerbaijani citizens is lower than the standard fee, and some groups get multiple entry visas more easily.
Before you go: five checks
- 1
Check the passport
Many countries want your passport valid 3 to 6 months after you arrive. Renew early; the Sroky reminders warn you months before it expires.
- 2
Check the day limit
Some limits count per entry, some per 180 days, and Russia counts 90 days per calendar year.
- 3
Check arrival forms
Thailand, Malaysia and the Maldives ask for an online arrival form before you land.
- 4
Check how you get there
Azerbaijan's land borders stay closed to passengers until at least 2 January 2027, so most trips start by air.
- 5
Check the purpose
Visa free entry is for short visits. Work and study almost always need a visa or permit.
