  • The ID card option has applied since 1 April 2021 and covers direct travel between Azerbaijan and Türkiye.
  • Only a machine readable biometric ID card is accepted, not an old card.
  • You can stay up to 90 days in any 180 days. To stay longer, apply for a Turkish residence permit before the 90 days end.

Can I go to Türkiye with my Azerbaijani ID card?

Yes, if you have the new generation ID card. Under a protocol between Azerbaijan and Türkiye, citizens of both countries can travel directly between the two countries with their identity card instead of a passport. The Turkish Foreign Ministry announced that the protocol entered into force on 1 April 2021.

Türkiye is visa free for Azerbaijani citizens anyway, so the question is only which document you show. With a passport you can do everything. With the ID card you can make a simple trip from Azerbaijan to Türkiye and back. See where else Azerbaijani passports go visa free.

Which documents are accepted for Türkiye

The State Migration Service guide on Türkiye lists the travel documents Azerbaijani citizens can use for visa free travel. The ID card is on the list only if it meets the ICAO 9303 standard: machine readable and with biometric data.

DocumentAccepted for Türkiye?Notes
Ordinary passportYesWorks for every route, including transit to other countries
New generation biometric ID cardYes, for direct travelMust be machine readable with a chip (ICAO 9303)
Old ID card without chipNoUse your passport
Return certificateOnly to go homeFor a short stay or transit on the way back to Azerbaijan
Diplomatic or service passportYesSeparate rules may apply to official trips

The direct travel rule and transit

The ID card protocol is about travel directly between the two countries. In practice that means a direct flight from an Azerbaijani airport to a Turkish airport, and back. Azerbaijan's land borders stay closed to passengers until at least 2 January 2027, so almost everyone flies.

If Istanbul is only a stop on your way to Europe, the Gulf or anywhere else, the ID card is not enough. The next country and the airline will ask for your passport. The same applies if you arrive in Türkiye from a third country. When in doubt, carry both documents.

The airline checks your document at check in. If the agent refuses your ID card, there is no way to fix it at the gate, so keep your passport valid even if you plan to use the card.

How long can Azerbaijanis stay in Türkiye?

Under the 2020 visa exemption agreement, Azerbaijani citizens can stay up to 90 days in any 180 days, whether they enter with a passport or an ID card. The Turkish Embassy in Baku confirms the same limit.

The 180 days are a moving window. On any day, look back 180 days and add up all the days you were in Türkiye, including the day you arrive and the day you leave. The total must not pass 90.

ExampleDays used in the last 180OK?
One trip of 30 days in spring, one of 45 days in summer75Yes
Three trips of 35 days within 6 months105No, 15 days over
90 days, then home for 90 days, then backBack to 0 on returnYes

Staying longer: Turkish residence permit

If you want to stay more than 90 days, apply for a residence permit (ikamet) before your 90 days end. You can apply online through the e-ikamet system of the Turkish migration authority or at the local migration office where you live. The Migration Service guide says your passport must be valid at least 60 days longer than the permit you ask for, so for this step you need a passport, not only an ID card.

Overstaying is costly. Türkiye fines people who stay past their allowed days, and if the fine is not paid the person can be banned from entering for up to 5 years. The Migration Service guide notes that once the fine is paid, the ban is lifted.

Practical tips before you fly

  • Check that your ID card has a chip and is valid for your whole trip. The Sroky reminders can track the expiry dates of your ID card and passport.
  • Azerbaijani embassy notices on Türkiye say a passport should be valid at least 6 months; if you travel with a passport, keep that margin.
  • Every child needs their own valid travel document. Ask your airline whether your child's card is accepted, or bring the child's passport.
  • Book a direct flight if you want to use the ID card.
  • Count your days if you visit often. A day counter such as the one in the Sroky app helps you stay under 90.
  • Keep a photo of your passport and ID on your phone in case you lose them. If that happens, see renewing an Azerbaijani passport abroad.
