Key points

  • Nigerian passports are not on the Azerbaijan e visa list and are not visa free, so students need an education visa from an Azerbaijani embassy.
  • The university first sends an invitation to the Foreign Ministry in Baku, which tells the named embassy to issue your visa.
  • You apply at an Azerbaijani embassy in the country where you live or in a third country. The decision takes up to 15 days.
  • After arrival, register your address within 15 days and file your student residence permit at least 30 days before your visa stay ends.
  • Nigeria is not a party to the Apostille Convention, so your certificates usually need legalisation and a translation.

Which visa does a Nigerian student need for Azerbaijan?

Nigeria is not on the list of countries that can use the online ASAN e visa, and it has no visa free agreement with Azerbaijan. So the online route that students from Pakistan or India use is closed to Nigerian passports. You need an education visa, issued by an Azerbaijani embassy or consulate on the basis of an invitation from your university (Migration Code, Article 27). It allows a first stay of up to 90 days, and you then switch to a student residence permit inside Azerbaijan.

Check your exact passport with the free visa checker or the Nigeria visa page. If you also hold a second passport from an e visa country, ask your university which one to use, and use the same passport from start to finish.

From admission to visa: step by step

  1. 1

    1. Apply to universities

Apply on the official portal portal.edu.az. It is free and you can choose up to 3 universities. You can do it alone; the Ministry of Science and Education warns about brokers who charge for what is free.

  2. 2

    2. Get your admission letter

The university may ask for more papers, an interview or a tuition payment before it confirms. Keep every email and receipt.

  3. 3

    3. The university invites you

Your university sends a letter to the Consular Department of the Foreign Ministry with the purpose (education), the length, the number of entries and the name of the embassy where you will apply. The state fee for the invitation is AZN 4, paid in Azerbaijan.

  4. 4

    4. Choose the embassy

You apply at an Azerbaijani embassy or consulate in the country where you live or in a third country. We could not confirm an Azerbaijani embassy in Nigeria, so check the Foreign Ministry list of missions and agree the embassy with your university before step 3.

  5. 5

    5. Apply for the visa

Submit the form and papers at the embassy, in person or through a representative. The embassy decides within 15 days. The state fee is not refunded if the visa is refused.

  6. 6

    6. Book your flight

Fly to Baku with a connection, for example in Istanbul, Doha or Dubai; check transit rules for the connecting country. Land borders are closed to passengers until 2 January 2027, so you arrive by air.

Documents for the embassy

  • Visa application form (it can be filled in electronically).
  • Passport valid at least 3 months longer than the visa you ask for, plus copies of the main pages.
  • Two colour photos 3 x 4 cm.
  • Copy of medical insurance, unless your host promises to pay medical costs.
  • Receipt for the state fee.
  • Your university's invitation reference and admission letter.
  • Any extra papers the embassy asks for, such as proof of funds.

Your certificates: legalisation and translation

Universities and the migration service may ask for your school certificates, WAEC or NECO results, a birth certificate or, for a family, a marriage certificate. Azerbaijan accepts the apostille from countries in the Hague Apostille Convention, but Nigeria is not on the HCCH list of parties when we checked. That usually means legalisation: the document is certified in Nigeria and then by the Azerbaijani embassy that covers Nigeria.

Ask your university exactly which papers it needs and in which form before you start, because legalisation takes time. Papers in English are usually translated into Azerbaijani and the translation notarised in Baku. Read apostille and legalisation for the full process.

Arriving in Baku: the first days

At passport control, officers check that your purpose fits. Carry in your hand luggage: passport with the visa, admission letter, the invitation details, a phone number of the international office that answers at your arrival time, your tuition receipt, the address of your first accommodation and money for the first weeks. Students report being asked to wait until the university confirms them, so land on a weekday in office hours if you can.

Go to your university in the first days to enrol and ask for the letter for the State Migration Service. The full arrival plan is in student visa and arrival.

The first 60 days: registration and residence permit

  • By day 15: your address must be registered. A dorm or landlord usually files it; you can file it yourself. It is free. Without it the fine is AZN 300 to 400.
  • In your first weeks: get the HIV and hepatitis B and C certificate, 2 photos 3.5 x 4.5 cm, and housing papers with the owner's consent.
  • By about day 60 of a 90 day visa: file the student residence permit, at least 30 days before your visa stay ends, at ASAN Service, a migration office or online. An accepted application keeps your stay legal.
  • Pay the permit fee within 30 days after the decision, or the permit is cancelled.

Students may not work in Azerbaijan without a work permit. Working on a student permit can cost you the permit and bring an entry ban.

Keep your dates in one place

The first months bring many deadlines: day 15 for registration, about day 60 for the permit, 30 days to pay the fee and then a yearly renewal. Sroky keeps these dates on your phone and reminds you before each one. Sroky is a private app, not the government, and the authorities decide every application.

Frequently asked questions

Can Nigerians get the Azerbaijan e visa?

No. Nigeria is not on the ASAN e visa list, so Nigerian students apply for an education visa at an Azerbaijani embassy.

Is there an Azerbaijan embassy in Nigeria?

We could not confirm one. You may apply at an Azerbaijani embassy in the country where you live or in a third country; agree the embassy with your university, because its name goes into the invitation.

How long does the Azerbaijan student visa take?

The embassy decides within 15 days after you apply. Add time for admission and the university invitation before that.

How much does it cost?

The invitation fee is AZN 4 and the single entry visa state fee is USD 20 in law, but check with the embassy. The first year student permit is AZN 40 or AZN 60.

Do my Nigerian certificates need an apostille?

Nigeria is not a party to the Apostille Convention, so documents usually need legalisation instead. Ask your university which papers it needs.

Can I work while I study in Azerbaijan?

Not without a work permit. A student residence permit alone does not give a right to work.
