Key points

  • Family means your spouse, children under 18, adult children who cannot work and parents you support (Migration Code 3.0.11).
  • Family members get their own residence permit (TRC) on the family ground, Article 45.1.5. The card is personal, also for children.
  • They can come together with you and file the same day at ASAN, or join later on your notarised invitation.
  • The fee for a 1 year family card is AZN 120 for an adult and AZN 60 for a child (20 working days), or AZN 160 and AZN 100 (15 working days).
  • A family member's card follows the sponsor's card, so plan to renew together.

Who counts as family in Azerbaijan?

The Migration Code (Article 3.0.11) names four groups: your spouse, your children under 18, adult children who cannot work, and parents who depend on you. The Migration Service explains that parents qualify only in narrow cases: when disabled, women aged 63 or older, men aged 65 or older, unable to work, or under guardianship.

Other relatives, and adult children who can work, need their own ground, such as study or work. See the TRC grounds.

Coming together or joining later

Never choose the purpose Tourism for a family member who plans to stay. Breaking the declared purpose is a refusal ground.

How to bring your family together with you

This is the route many students and workers use when the whole family flies in at once.

  1. 1

    Apply for their e visa

On evisa.gov.az, a separate family application with the purpose Personal trip. One family application covers 2 to 10 people, and a child in a parent's passport still needs own data. Or let Sroky's visa service file it.

  2. 2

    Fly together

Keep marriage and birth certificates in your hand luggage.

  3. 3

    Register everyone within 15 days

The rule covers every foreigner staying more than 15 days, children included. It is free.

  4. 4

File all TRCs the same day at ASAN

The staff fill in a form for each family member, you sign the consent, and all applications go in together. One set of housing papers (rent contract or kupça and the owner's consent) covers the family.

How your family can join you later

  1. 1

    Get your own TRC first

The private visit visa is tied to an inviter who holds a TRC or studies here.

  2. 2

    Write a notarised invitation

With a copy of your passport and TRC, a promise to cover their costs (or proof of their funds), and proof of the family tie.

  3. 3

    They get a visa

From an e visa country: an e visa with the purpose Personal trip. Otherwise: a private visit visa (Article 30) at an Azerbaijani embassy, up to 90 days stay, USD 20 single entry. Visa free citizens: ask the Migration Service whether a visit visa is still needed.

  4. 4

Register within 15 days of arrival

The host or landlord files it, or the person does.

  5. 5

    File the family TRC

Ground 45.1.5, before the stay runs out. On an e visa, file within the 30 days.

Documents for a family residence permit

  • Application form and passport (valid at least 3 months after the permit; see passport validity rules).
  • Medical certificate (HIV, hepatitis B and C) and two photos 3.5 x 4.5 cm.
  • Current visa or entry document, and the housing document with the owner's consent and ID copy.
  • Spouse: marriage certificate copy and a copy of your passport.
  • Child under 18: birth certificate copy and a copy of the parent's passport. A child without a passport uses a notarised birth certificate copy. The parent files for the child.
  • Adult child unable to work: birth certificate, parent's passport and notarised proof of incapacity.
  • Your consent as the sponsor, signed at ASAN (notarised only if you cannot come).
  • Foreign marriage and birth certificates translated and notarised. CIS and Türkiye documents covered by treaties are accepted with the original. Ask the notary whether your original needs an apostille.
  • If a name changed, the document of the change. If there is no birth certificate, a court decision or a paternity certificate.
  • State fee receipt. Children under 15 give no fingerprints.

Family TRC fees

The family card cannot run longer than the sponsor's card, so you only pay up to your own expiry date. Shorter periods cost less: for an adult, AZN 30 or 40 for 3 months and AZN 60 or 80 for 6 months, depending on the processing time. The fee is paid when the card is collected, within 30 days after the decision, or the permit is cancelled.

These are family rates. Students pay a lower student rate only for their own card, not for their family. The government sets the fees and can change them, so check the amount on the ASAN or Migration Service page before you pay.

Living here as a family

  • Renew together: the office takes the sponsor's card end date into account, and every person must file at least 30 days before their card ends. Sroky tracks each family member's dates on one phone.
  • A spouse on the family ground needs a separate work permit to work.
  • A child at school can hold a family TRC or a study TRC (45.1.9 covers general schools too). See schools for expat children.
  • A baby born in Azerbaijan: get the birth certificate, then a passport from your embassy, then apply for the baby's TRC as a family member. No fixed deadline was found, so apply early.
  • Family who only want to visit can come on an e visa, visa free, or on a private visit visa of up to 90 days.

Never miss this deadline

Add your permit, passport and registration to Sroky. It counts the days, warns you early and keeps every document encrypted on your phone.
