Uzbekistan: who goes visa free and for how long
Uzbekistan's official tourism site lists two visa free groups: neighbours such as Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine, and a group of about 90 countries allowed up to 30 days from the day of entry, which includes the EU, the UK, the US, Japan, South Korea and China.
For Azerbaijani citizens the two governments give different figures: the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry lists 90 days under the bilateral agreement, while Uzbekistan's tourism site lists 60 days for this group. Plan for the shorter period, or confirm with the Uzbek embassy in Baku before a long stay.
The Uzbekistan e visa
If your passport is not visa free, you may be able to apply on the official Uzbekistan e visa portal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Indian citizens, for example, use it. The portal checks your nationality at the first step: if you are visa free it stops and tells you, and if your country is not on its list it tells you to contact an Uzbek embassy.
| Item | Uzbekistan e visa |
|---|---|
| Consular fee | USD 20 (single entry), paid by card, not refundable |
| Double or multiple entry | USD 35 or USD 50, where offered |
| Stay | Up to 30 days per entry |
| Validity | 90 days from issue |
| Decision | About 3 business days, sent by email as a PDF |
| Uploads | Face photo to ICAO rules and a passport scan under 500 KB |
If the e visa and your passport differ in any detail, the e visa is invalid. Type your data exactly as in the passport you will travel with.
Kazakhstan: visa free days by passport
Kazakhstan's Foreign Ministry publishes one table for every country and passport type. For ordinary passports, Azerbaijan, Türkiye and Uzbekistan get up to 90 days, many Western countries and China get up to 30 days, and India and Iran get up to 14 days. Pakistani citizens need a visa.
The 90 day rule for Azerbaijanis is counted within any 180 days, so long stays need planning. A day counter such as the one in the Sroky app helps you stay inside the limit.
The Kazakhstan e visa needs an invitation
Kazakhstan's e visa is not a simple online form. It is issued through the Visa and Migration Portal vmp.gov.kz only on the basis of an invitation from a person or company in Kazakhstan. The host gets an invitation number, and you enter it in your application. The e visa cannot be extended.
If you have no host, apply for a visa at a Kazakh embassy or consulate. The fee and the country list for e visas have changed several times; check the current figures on the portal or with the embassy before you pay.
Registration after arrival
- Uzbekistan: hotels and other accommodation report foreign guests to the internal affairs authorities within 3 days of arrival. If you stay with a private host, the host must register you in the same period.
- Kazakhstan: the host, whether a hotel or a private person, notifies the migration service within 3 working days of your arrival, online through vmp.gov.kz or eQonaq. This applies on each entry and when you change address.
- Keep your registration slip or confirmation until you leave. Border officers can ask for it.
- If you live in Azerbaijan, remember your own deadlines at home too. The Sroky reminders can warn you before a residence card or passport runs out.
