Key points
- Citizens of about 95 countries, including Azerbaijan, Türkiye, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, the EU, the UK, the US and the Gulf states, can stay in Georgia visa free for one full year.
- People of other nationalities with a valid visa or residence permit of about 50 listed countries, such as the US, the UK, Schengen states or the Gulf states, can stay 90 days in any 180.
- An Azerbaijani residence permit is not on that list, so Indian, Pakistani or Chinese citizens living in Baku follow the rule for their own passport.
- Everyone else applies for a Georgian e visa on evisa.gov.ge or a visa at an embassy. An e visa is decided within 5 working days.
- Since 1 January 2026 every tourist must hold health and accident insurance of at least GEL 30,000 for the whole stay.

Who can stay in Georgia visa free for a year?
Georgia has one of the most open entry rules in the world. A government ordinance lists countries whose citizens may enter and stay without a visa for one full year. The list includes Azerbaijan, Armenia, Türkiye, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, all EU states, the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Israel, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and all six Gulf states.
For Azerbaijani citizens the bilateral agreement listed by Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry gives 90 days, but Georgia's own one year rule is more generous and applies at the Georgian border. If you plan a long stay, confirm your case on the Georgian consular site.
The ordinance has been amended over the years. The list above follows the published text; check your passport in the Do I need a visa tool on geoconsul.gov.ge before you travel.
Visa and residence holders: 90 days in any 180
A second ordinance helps people whose own passport is not on the one year list. If you hold a valid visa or residence permit of a listed country, you can enter Georgia without a visa and stay 90 days in any 180 day period. The permit must be valid on the day you enter.
- Example: an Indian citizen with a valid UAE residence visa can stay 90 days in 180.
- The Georgian embassy in the UAE notes extra conditions for some nationalities, for example Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria and Morocco: their UAE visa or residence must be multiple entry and valid at least 1 more year.
- An Indian or Pakistani citizen whose only permit is an Azerbaijani residence card needs a Georgian visa or e visa.
| Group | Examples |
|---|---|
| Visa or residence of | USA, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Israel, all EU and Schengen states, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland |
| Gulf visa or residence | UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain |
| Not on the list | Azerbaijan, Türkiye, Russia and most other countries |
The Georgian e visa
If you need a visa, the fastest route for tourism or business is the e visa portal evisa.gov.ge, run by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. You must be outside Georgia when you apply. A short term single entry visa allows up to 30 days, and the total stay cannot pass 90 days in any 180.
| Step or rule | Official detail |

Insurance is now mandatory
Under the Law of Georgia on Tourism, every tourist entering Georgia since 1 January 2026 must hold a valid health and accident insurance policy. It can be on paper or on your phone, in Georgian or English, from a Georgian or foreign insurer.
- Minimum cover: GEL 30,000.
- It must cover the whole stay, including the arrival and departure days.
- The policy must show the parties, territory, dates, insured risks, the sum insured and the premium.
- Diplomatic passport holders, accredited diplomats and international drivers are exempt.
- See travel insurance for visa applications for what to check in a policy.
Going to Georgia from Baku
Most people fly from Baku to Tbilisi or Batumi. The land border has its own rules for who may cross; read Azerbaijan land borders and the Tbilisi to Baku train before you plan a road or rail trip.
If you live in Azerbaijan on a residence card, a trip to Georgia does not reset or pause your Azerbaijani permit. Our guide on visa runs from Azerbaijan explains why. Sroky does not file Georgian visas: apply on evisa.gov.ge yourself. For other destinations, see where Azerbaijani passports can travel or travel from India.
